Hi! I am Yaseen, currently working as an AI Engineer at Yoummday GmbH. Previously, I studied MS in Computer Science at Saarland University in Germany and started working as Machine Learning Engineer at MPI-Informatics. I have worked as Research Assistant with Prof. Jilles Vreeken. I also have 3 years of experience working in the industry with the focus on solving business problems. Specifically, I have worked as ML Engineer at Gaditek – a Cyber Security company and have developed tools on top of Big Data technologies to answer business questions using methods and techniques from ML and Data Science.

- Advisor and Supreme Commander: Prof. Jilles Vrekeen
- EDA Group website
- As part of my work I have implemented and benchmarked various ML and Data Science methods in Python and C/C++, as required. I also gained valuable experience of implementing algorithms and methods from research literature as well as of adapting and re‑writing available PyTorch and TensorFlow code or re‑implementing it using PyTorch Lightning, along with visualization and debugging setup using SciKit, Tensorboard, Pandas, Jupyter Notebooks.
- I worked on developing methods for Windowless Anomaly Detection in univariate and multivariate event sequences e.g. sensor data, natural language text, automated event logs using tools from Probabilistic Modeling, Information Theory, and Minimum Description Length formalism.
- I am finishing up my MSc thesis on Variational Auto‑Encoders with Structured Latent Variables under supervision of Prof. Dr. Jilles Vreeken which combines Computer Vision and Generative Modeling to make (Convolutional) Nerual Networks more interpretable and explainable.
- Finally, for reproducibility and convenience in super computing environment I migrated the entire environment to Docker.

- Was awarded SaarlandStipendium (scholarship) for International Students by Saarland State Government

Past
PureVPN (via Disrupt Ventures)

Machine Learning Engineer (December 2016 – March 2019)
At Gaditek, I was part of the Data Science team and worked on Big Data infrastructure development and analytics for their cyber‑securit product PureVPN (purevpn.com)
Job role and responsibilities:
- Developing Big Data Infrastructure: I was responsible for prototyping and development of company’s first in‑house Big Data infrastructure based on Hadoop, Flume, Hive, and Spark. This infrastructure was then used for data ingestion, storage, business analytics, and reporting applications serving the needs of Marketing, Finance, Customer Service, and Network Service teams.
- Data Sources Auditing and Data Cleaning: I contributed to mapping company’s data sources across several departments and functional units. This resulted in clearly documenting and defining data inflow and outflow processes. I also later applied this documentation to define SOPs and auditing procedures for data sources. This exercise helped in ensuring data quality when used later in analysis and reporting applications.
- Network Analytics and Reporting: Based on Big Data infrastructure, I developed server logs and events ingestion pipeline using Hadoop, Flume, and Spark (Java, Python). This was used by network service team for load planning, acquisition, and upgrades for a network of 700+ servers and to answer the key business questions such as (1) which network segments are most or least profitable, (2) most or least utilized, as well as (3) network segments that are under or over performing i.e identifying blind spots and expansion opportunities.
- Customer Segmentation and Marketing: I also contributed to Customer Journey, Profitability, and Life Time Value (LTV) modeling by aggregating data from various sources e.g. software application logs, network usage logs, customer metadata to identify profitable customer segments. I also helped Marketing and Customer Success teams in designing and tracking marketing campaigns as well as automating Ad‑Pricing on Google AdWords platform. This work used Python (SciKit) to model Regression (LTV), Classification (Churn), and exploratory analysis (Segmentation and Clustering). The key business questions were to (1) predict customers who are at risk to churn or unsubscribe (Retention), (2) acquire new customers with high LTV (Acquisition), and (3) identify interesting customer behaviours to improve the product (Enhancement)
TU Kaiserslautern / German Research Center for AI, Kaiserslautern, Germany

Research Intern (June 2016 – August 2016)
In German, Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz (DFKI)
Internship supervisors:
- Dr. Prof. h.c. Andreas Dengel (TU KL / DFKI / Google Scholar)
- Dr-Ing. Syed Saqib Bukhari (TU KL / DFKI / Google Scholar)
This internship was part of Smart Agriculture project collaboration between NED University (Pakistan) and DFKI (Germany). During this internship I learned how AI and ML is being used at DFKI to solve many different problems in fields like agriculture, farming, smart books/learning, document understanding and segmentation.

As part of my project study, I gave following 2 presentations:
- Commercial and Research Landscape for Smart Irrigation Systems – Presented as part of an initial project study at DFKI.
- Smart Irrigation Systems – Hardware Architecture – A presentation I gave at 10th Workshop on Field and Assistive Robotics (WFAR 10) at Schloss Dagstuhl in Wadern, Germany.
Research Center for AI (now NCAI), NED University

Research Student (June 2015 – December 2016)
Supervisor: Dr. Muhammad Khurram (NED UET)
At RCAI I worked mainly on projects leveraging the Internet of Things (IoT) technology.
- IoT in Agriculture: In this German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) funded project, as part of hardware design team I worked on several prototypes based on different Arduino and custom boards.
- IoT in Warehouse: In this project I worked on a device which helps warehouse workers avoid accidental injury-causing encounters with automated heavy-machinery and tools. My work included writing code C/C++ for hardware interfacing.

Project presentation: A Smart Safety Gadget for Avoiding Accidents in Warehouse Environment
- IoT in Healthcare: In this project I worked on a Bluetooth enabled low-power oximeter which measures blood-oxygen level and heart rate. My responsibilities included writing code in C/C++ for interfacing the hardware components. I also developed an Android app Java for operating device via smartphone.
